As told in my post of wishes about Happy New Year 2015, here are some statistics on the traffic to my blog Qualilogy during the year 2014.
As usual, I will use Google Analytics, although it tends to minimize the results since it considers only visits from browsers with JavaScript enabled.
This is in order to avoid to take in account ‘hits’ performed by search engines, spam tools, etc.
Indeed, the statistics provided by the tool installed on my website (Awstats) gives the following results: 56 734 unique visitors in 133 852 sessions and 573 711 pages viewed.
Note that these figures concern visits realized through a browser (Viewed traffic).
However, many spammers voluntarily use a browser to appear as a real web site in the statistics. There are also those who attempt to ‘spam-comment’ my posts, and I’m not even talking about the number of people trying to log as an ‘admin’: I still had to block around thirty of them this morning.
So these statistics are overvalued.
At least with Google Analytics, spammers websites disappear from the dashboard.
Overview
According to Google, from 1st of January to December 31, 29 291 unique people made 39 740 visits and 70 613 pages viewed.
This does that the number of unique visitors since the creation of Qualilogy, has increased from just under 40 000 to just under 70 000 in 2014.
At the end of 2014, there are nearly 95 000 visits and 175 000 pages viewed since the beginning of my blog, in 2011. Not bad, for a rather technical and not very glamorous blog. I mean, it’s not a blog about fashion or celebrities.
Geographic distribution
The top 12 countries of our visitors represent 28 802 visits, so 72.5% of all of them.
The ranking is somewhat similar to what it was already in 2013, with the only difference that France has been passed by India.
Latin America is well represented again, with five countries: Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Chile and Argentina, combining 4 616 visits, or 16% of the total. If we add Brazil, we got 5 919 visits or 20% of the total.
Considering now the countries of Hispanic language, that is to say, the 4 616 Spanish-speaking visitors to which we add 3 977 visits from Spain, we reach a total of 8 593 visits or 30% of this top 12. To be compared with 11 610 English-speaking visitors, from India, United States and the United Kingdom (44% of the total).
The following graph shows the percentage distribution of the top 12 countries with India, France and the United States first, closely followed by Spain.
We note that Mexico is shoulder to shoulder with United Kingdom, and once again, the share taken by the global traffic from Latin America.
Distribution by themes
In order to verify the interests of our visitors, I have listed the 230 most visited pages, with at least 50 visits on each in 2014, for a total of 63 753 pages viewed (90% of the total number of pageviews).
I then sorted these pages by topic and language (or better said, ‘sub-blog’).
The ‘SonarQube’ category is obviously the best represented with 86 posts about the installation, upgrade, or configuration of SonarQube, Jenkins and any other tool present in my environment (Oracle or JDK for example). You will find there also different articles on the realization of an analysis, the customization of a Quality Profile, etc.
As in 2013, these pages ‘SonarQube’ represent 2/3 of the visits, with over 42 000 views on 86 posts (distributed in the three languages French, English and Spanish).
The posts in the ‘Abap’, ‘Cobol’ and ‘PL-SQL’ categories speak of code analyzes with SonarQube plugins specific to these languages. And there is still an interest, as in 2013, in these subjects since they total more than 12 000 views, about 19% of the total, in 69 posts. Even though they are quite old: at least 2 years for the ‘Abap’ posts, and I wrote those on ‘Cobol’ in 2012.
The category ‘Other’ lists all other articles, about quality of applications, tools, the Cloud or even my life as a freelance (approximately 10% of visits).
‘Main’ is a category where I listed a few ‘main’ pages of the blog, such as the main url ‘www.qualilogy.com’ or the url of the specific sites for the three languages (‘\en’, ‘\fr’, ‘\es’) or pages linking to these sites from the main url. Many visitors arrive directly on the blog with these urls, probably bookmarked in their browser.
Distibution by languages
I also checked the distribution of such themes on the three sub-blogs. In all cases, the ‘SonarQube’ posts are still predominant, but more importantly on the site ‘\en’ (75% of page views) that on the ‘\fr’ or ‘\es’ (about 55%) .
Strong interest in Abap on the ‘\es’ pages, a technology that attracts many visitors from Latin America.
Cobol resists well on the ‘\en’ site, perhaps because many outsourcers who maintain Mainframe Cobol applications are English speaking.
Everybody likes PL-SQL, regardless of visitors’ origin.
‘Other’ posts are relatively more visited on the ‘\fr’.
The sub-blog ‘\en’ represents two thirds of the pages viewed, and the ‘\es’ site is over 20% of the total pageviews.
So no surprise in 2014, we can find again the trends already observed in 2013:
- India and United States are shoulder to shoulder with France, and Spain not far behind.
- Latin America represents each one of five visits. With Spain, the Spanish-speaking countries represent over 30% of visits.
- This places the Spanish blog in second place, behind the English one and before the French site.
- Finally, Abap and Cobol pages still attract many visitors, despite the age of these posts.
So I note to refresh and update these posts. Among other things. There is so much to write about analyzing the quality of applications with SonarQube.
